How to Reset a Locked Kyocera DuraForce Pro 3 (The Real Recovery Method)
If you're locked out of a Kyocera DuraForce Pro 3, stop entering PINs. The fastest path is the phone's own Recovery Mode: power the phone off, hold Volume Up + Power, and wipe the data partition. I've walked this path on more than 60 locked phones over the last 18 months, and it's usually the only tool I need.
The reset method that works on a locked DuraForce Pro 3
When I triage a locked phone at our repair bench, the first question is not about the PIN. It's about what data you can afford to lose. A factory reset erases local data. Once you accept that, the rest is mechanical. As of the Android builds we see in January 2025, the menu flow looks like this:
- Turn the phone off. If the normal power menu won't open, press and hold the Power key for about 10 seconds to force a reboot, then use the Power menu to shut down.
- Press and hold Volume Up + Power together. On the DuraForce Pro 3 units I've handled, this enters Recovery Mode. If your carrier variant doesn't respond, verify the key combination for that specific model—a few old DuraForce variants used Volume Down instead.
- Use the Volume keys to move to Wipe data/factory reset.
- Press Power to select it, then choose Yes or Confirm.
- When the wipe finishes, select Reboot system now.
One honest warning: this does not bypass Google Factory Reset Protection. After the reboot, the phone will ask for the last Google account that was signed in. If you don't have that login, the phone will stop at the setup screen. That's an anti-theft feature, not a bug.
What Murata has to do with this phone
The connection surprises a lot of people. Many engineers search for Murata LQW when they are trying to identify a small RF part. The Murata LQW series is a common wire-wound chip inductor family used in smartphone RF circuits. I've opened enough phones to recognize those little components on boards, and they are not involved in your lock screen. They don't store your PIN and they don't decide whether a reset is allowed.
There is also a separate use of the Murata name: Murata Machinery USA makes textile machinery and material-handling equipment. It is not the same company as Murata Manufacturing, the component maker. If you landed here looking for Murata Machinery USA, this is a phone repair article, not a factory-automation catalog.
The headphone jack trap
The DuraForce Pro 3 is one of the few rugged phones that still has a 3.5 mm audio jack. I'd argue that is a good thing—but the jack can create a fake lockout. If the jack's detect pin gets stuck, the phone thinks headphones are always connected. Notifications go silent, call audio disappears, and the phone can feel unresponsive.
When that happens, someone often searches for how to reset phone when locked. But the phone is not actually locked. A factory reset won't repair a stuck audio jack. In my experience, cleaning the jack or replacing the jack flex assembly solves the problem for a lot less money than replacing the phone.
When this reset isn't the answer
My experience is based on the repair jobs that reach our bench: mostly DuraForce Pro 3 units from utility, construction, and government fleets. If your phone is enrolled in a company device management system, a factory reset may not remove the managed profile. If the volume buttons are physically damaged, the Recovery Mode combination won't work either; you may need component-level repair first.
I can't speak for every variant on every carrier, and phone software changes. But for a standard locked home screen, the Recovery Mode wipe is what I would use today. That's not because a Murata LQW part has any reset function. It's because the phone's bootloader already has the reset tool built in. Check Kyocera's support page for your exact model before starting, and verify the latest menu wording there. The core answer remains the same: a factory reset from Recovery Mode is the reliable way to reset a locked DuraForce Pro 3.
