  • Date code range on the label should match the date codes you can see on the parts
  • Quantity on the label should match the stated reel count within your agreement

If your receiving team doesn't have this process yet, writing it down is a no-brainer fix. It takes two minutes and can save you from a line-down investigation.

3. Verify markings on the component itself

Small passives can be frustrating. Many LQW inductors don't have a complete part number printed on them. Sometimes there's just a one-character code, or no marking at all. That's normal if the datasheet says so. The danger is when a part should be marked and isn't, or when the code doesn't match the datasheet.

Use a microscope or a good magnifier at about 20-30x. For flip-chip components, check the orientation mark. A reversed orientation mark can send a pick-and-place machine the wrong way.

Honestly, this is the step most people skip first. They assume the reel label is enough. It isn't.

4. Measure dimensions and termination style

Take real measurements. At least five pieces from different positions on the reel, not the first three from the end. For an LQW inductor, check length, width, height, and terminal dimensions. For flip-chip parts, check bump height and coplanarity if you have the equipment.

This is where the '2660 flip' shorthand gets dangerous again. A package size or a flip-chip description is not a spec. The measured part should match the limits in the Murata datasheet for the full part number, not the typical values.

5. Check date codes and split reels

In Q1 2024, I caught a batch where the label said one continuous date code and the reels inside had two different codes. That's a split reel. Ignoring tape-and-reel orientation

Orientation matters for pick-and-place. We once flagged a 50,000-piece reel where the component orientation was flipped halfway through the tape. The label was correct. The dimensions were correct. The placement line would have populated a board backward. That two-hour inspection saved an entire production shift.

The 'Murata vs Cisco' question

Some search traffic lands on this page with 'Murata vs Cisco.' That's not a component-level matchup. Murata is a component manufacturer. Cisco is a network equipment corporation.
